Sonora, Calif., (Nov. 14, 2014)… The Rim Fire Forest Closure Order expires on Nov. 17, and though this will increase recreational opportunities, caution in the burned area is still advised. Click to view forest closure briefing paper.

Though the vast majority of the closure order has been lifted, there are a few sections deemed too dangerous for public travel, including Spinning Wheel and several roads in the Cottonwood area, which will impact access to Cherry Lake.

“Falling snags are still a concern,” says Jeanne Higgins, Forest Supervisor. “There are still structurally damaged trees in the Forest that can fall without warning. Wind, snow-load and insect infestations can negatively impact these trees for some time to come.”

Sedimentation flows and increased runoff will continue to pose a threat for a while as well. Watersheds burned by fire can take up to ten years to heal. In the meantime, it is important to note and heed signage warning of potential hazards.

The severely burned hillsides around Spinning Wheel remain unstable and are still subject to mudslides and sedimentation flows. Damaged public facilities have yet to be replaced in that area as well.

Steep cliffs and unstable trees remain an issue along the Cottonwood Road (1N04). As a result, access to Cherry Lake is only available via Highway 120. Unfortunately, access from Tuolumne city and Highway 108 are not possible due to safety issues.

Due to low water levels at the lake, motorized boats are not advised. The current water level renders the boat ramp non-functional.

The expiring Closure Order 2014-01 covered the area burned by the Rim Fire to protect the visiting public from a host of safety issues including fire-killed trees. Though most of the falling trees were mitigated through the salvage logging process, travelers should remain cautious.
