July 22, 2024 - Nearly 22,000 wildland firefighters are assigned to wildfires nationwide, including 20 complex and 6 Type 1 incident management teams, 530 crews, 1,310 engines, numerous aviation resources, and four modular Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems, or MAFFS.
As of this morning, 66 large active wildfires are being managed and have burned 1,125,770 acres. Fire managers are using full suppression strategies on 61 of these wildfires. Many wildfires in the Northwest area continue to have active to extreme fire behavior, with evacuation orders in effect on 11 fires. Evacuation orders are also in effect for several fires in California and the Great Basin. If you live in an area that has been evacuated, please follow the instructions from local authorities. They will provide the latest recommendations based on the threat to your community and appropriate safety measures.
The Great Basin Coordination Center's predictive services staff have issued three fuels and fire behavior advisories for Nevada, Southern Idaho and Utah and Arizona Strip. There is also a fuels and fire behavior advisory in effect for California. Residents, travelers, or workers on their way to any of these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks.
The national predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for July through October. For additional information about the current outlook visit the Outlook page on the NICC site.
As we navigate a summer of widespread fire activity, there are steps we can take to proactively protect our homes and communities. Keep streets and roads clear so that fire engines can safely maneuver and residents can evacuate if needed. Make sure fire hydrants are visible and accessible. Clear flammable vegetation around structures, on large lots, and along roadsides. These simple prevention measures can go a long way toward reducing fire damage to your home and community.
Isolated, mainly dry thunderstorms are likely from eastern Oregon through the much of Idaho and into portions of northwest Nevada and southwest Idaho Monday. This will come on the heels of well above to record-setting temperatures for multiple days. Hot, well above normal temperatures will continue across much of the Inland Northwest, northern California, northern Great Basin, and northern Rockies, with thermal troughing in central and northern California and from the central Great Basin through the northern Rockies. West-northwest winds will increase along and east of the Cascades Monday, especially in the Cascades Gaps and just downstream, with gusts of 30-35 mph possible. However, temperatures will cool and relative humidity increases west of the Cascades as a weak marine push moves in. Scattered to widespread mostly wet thunderstorms will continue across the Southwest into the southern Great Basin, the southern/central Sierra, and Colorado Rockies, mostly along and east of the Divide. Scattered to widespread thunderstorms are likely along and south of a front stretching from Texas through the Southeast into the Mid-Atlantic Monday. Chances of thunderstorms exist for much of the central and eastern US except for portions of the northern Great Lakes and New England.
