July 31, 2018 - As containment increases on the Ferguson Fire, crews have begun the process of mopping up. In some portions of the fire, specifically the Jerseydale Road and Snyder Ridge areas, firefighters already have completed mop-up.
Mop-up is making a fire safe and reducing residual smoke after the fire or a section of the fire has been contained by extinguishing or removing burning material along or near the line, felling snags or moving logs so they won't roll downhill.
This process is essential to the full-containment of the fire and ensuring public safety.
This video shows how firefighters use hand tools and water to stir the ashes and unburned fuels to be sure the area is cool before moving down the line.
