2019 Rangeland and Livestock Management 101
“Training for Ranchers and Land Managers”

April 2, 2019 - University of California, Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Livestock & Natural Resources Advisor for Mariposa & Merced Counties, Fadzayi Mashiri, in collaboration with three colleagues, is hosting a 2-day training course for ranchers and land managers. The training will be held on Wednesday, May 1st and Thursday, May 2nd, 2019 in the UCCE Merced office classroom on 2145 Wardrobe Avenue Merced, CA. 95341.

This is the first time this training has been offered in California. The goal of this training is to provide a solid foundation of science-based information in rangeland ecology and livestock management principles to people that directly manage working rangelands. Central to this training is fieldwork to provide attendees with hands-on skills and demonstrations, ranging from plant identification, vegetation monitoring techniques, soil ecology and soil health, grazing management, and low stress animal handling. Other topics covered include: herd health and disease prevention, rangeland stewardship and ecosystem services, drought management, animal and foraging behavior and weed management.

This comprehensive course will provide ranchers and land managers with a broad understanding of the mechanisms driving ecosystem changes and livestock productivity, so managers can take a proactive and adaptive approach to their management decisions. A broad understanding of basic rangeland ecology is critical for land managers because working rangelands are inherently complex ecosystems, which have many interacting ecological and socio-economic factors that influence productivity and sustainability. Therefore, land managers require more science-based information to make informed management decisions that enhance productivity and maintain a healthy ecosystem whether it be managing for ranching operations, eco- or agritourism, or simply to maintain a healthy ecosystem.

Registration is required. The registration fee is $95.00 per person ($150 for two people from same ranch). Registration includes lunch for both days, light refreshments and training materials. Registration information can be found on-line at: cemariposa.ucanr.edu. You can also register by mail, call (209) 966-2417 for mailing information. The registration deadline is Friday, April 26, 2019.

This training is organized by Fadzayi Mashiri in collaboration with Livestock and Natural Resources Advisors, Rebecca Ozeran- Fresno & Madera Counties, Theresa Becchetti- Stanislaus & San Joaquin Counties, and Leslie Roche- UC ANR Rangeland Specialist based at UC Davis.
