April 26, 2019 - Clovis, CA. – Last winter’s storms brought much needed and welcomed rain and snow to the Sierra Nevada. This heavy winter has also resulted in trees falling across roadways, trails, campgrounds and picnic areas throughout the forest. 

These falling trees along with swelling creeks, rivers & streams can impact roadways, picnic areas, trails, camping spots and parking areas. “We have seen a particularly large number of trees down since the winter storms, and recent wind events across the forest” said Dean Gould Forest Supervisor.

With the arrival of warmer temperatures, we expect to see an increase in visitors coming out to enjoy the forest, and its recreational opportunities. Forest Officials would like to remind the public that many weakened trees can be found in some of the most popular destinations. Crews are out assessing damage and removing hazard trees as quickly as possible. Our priority is public safety and taking care to remove these trees, reducing the hazard risk for those visiting the Sierra.

Be prepared before you arrive: 

• Be aware that trees can fall behind you potentially blocking your exit route; research alternate routes that are available 

• Let family/friends know your travel plans and expected return time. Cell phone coverage is limited across the Forest.

• Call ahead for road conditions.
