May 25, 2019 - Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Friday released the following statement on President Trump selling arms to Saudi Arabia without congressional approval and outside the standard review process:
“President Trump circumventing Congress to sell more weapons to Saudi Arabia is unacceptable. The Saudi-led war in Yemen is not an emergency, it is a crime against humanity.
“The Saudis have created the world’s worst humanitarian disaster in Yemen. Famine has killed of more than 85,000 children, cholera has spread to more than 1.4 million people and millions have been pushed to the brink of starvation. Further enabling this cruel and unnecessary war will only lead to more civilian deaths.
“Saudi Arabia must not only be held accountable for its war in Yemen, but also for its numerous human rights violations, including the murder of American journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Senate has already voted unanimously to hold Crown Prince bin Salman and Saudi Arabia accountable for these actions, and it’s past time for the president to join us.
“My whole view of Saudi Arabia changed with the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. I will not support another Saudi-arms sales, and I urge all of my Senate colleagues to stand up for congressional prerogative and block the president’s end-run around the law.”
