June 15, 2019 - SACRAMENTO – California Attorney General Xavier Becerra issues tips to help Californians identify and report elder abuse ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day xavier becerra california attorney general(WEAAD) on June 15.

“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day should serve as a wake-up call for us all. Elder abuse happens every single day in our communities; and when it does, it’s our grandparents, parents, and loved ones who suffer,” said Attorney General Becerra. “By knowing the warning signs, we can all help prevent and combat the abuse, harm, and neglect inflicted on our most vulnerable. If you suspect a case of elder abuse, don’t turn a blind eye. Please check our website for resources and information on what you can do to help. My team and I will continue to investigate and vigorously prosecute those who target this population."

Through the Bureau of Medi‑Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse (BMFEA), the Attorney General’s office works to protect Californians by investigating and prosecuting those responsible for abuse, neglect, and fraud committed against elderly and dependent adults in care facilities. BMFEA also regularly works with whistleblowers and law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute fraud perpetrated in the Medi‑Cal program.

Ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Attorney General Becerra provides additional practical tips to help California elders, dependent adults and caregivers prevent abuse. The tips include:

  • Know the types of harm such as physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect;
  • Watch for warning signs in individuals’ behavior and appearance;
  • Know how to identify dangers to protect yourselves or your elders from harms such as falling prey to scams; and
  • Report suspected abuse or neglect immediately.

For more information about the Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse please visit our website at http://oag.ca.gov/bmfea/. If you suspect abuse or neglect of elders or dependent adults in care facilities, call BMFEA’s Hotline immediately: 1-800-722-0432. For emergencies, call 911 immediately.
