August 9, 2019 - Longtime resident Susan Taber has announced she is running for County Supervisor in District IV, currently held by Kevin Cann.
With a broad work background and volunteer experience, Taber feels she understands the pulse of the county and plans on learning a lot more from her constituents. Her campaign motto is “Pro Balance - Agriculture, Business and Tourism”. She believes we can balance our resources to stimulate the health of all areas of economic development, agriculture, small business and tourism.
Taber has several early goals to accomplish after gaining office. She would like to reinstate the Mariposa and Bootjack Town Planning Advisory Committees so constituents in those areas have a voice. She also wants to increase transparency within county government. “We need more transparency in the way we do business in the County” says Taber.
Taber believes the county needs to continue to address affordable housing and improve economic development. “I have been listening to many business owners in Mariposa and I am very supportive of their efforts,” said Taber. Communication is very important, Taber says, “I will listen to people and take into consideration their comments and ideas. I want people to present their ideas and then see where we can take them.?
Within Mariposa County government Taber served as a Planning Commissioner District V. Last year Taber was hired to be the first Homeless Shelter Manager where she worked to develop policies and set up the original shelters.
Several years ago, Taber served as the Visitor Bureau Manager. She also started Mariposa Special Olympics and the Mariposa Community Foundation. An artist herself, Taber was a Board Member and employee of the Mariposa County Arts Council, had great success as a volunteer art teacher for Spring Hill High School and the Mariposa County School District.
Taber grew up as a 4-H member and has been a 4-H Leader. She facilitated the start of Agri-Tourism in 2004 which later became the Farm and Ranch Tour. Recently Taber began the Plant A Row program which encourages people with gardens to plant an extra row of vegetables and donate them to the underserved population.
The Taber family bought their property here in 1958 and later Susan graduated from Mariposa County High School. Eventually Taber made her way into the greater world, married, had two children, Kama and Patrick and then made her way back to Mariposa in 2000. Her mother, Gert Taber, was a Mariposa County Supervisor from 1989 to 1996. As a youngster her mother said Taber was “an initiator and an instigator” and Taber will be that for Mariposa County.
Taber will build on her experiences with helping people and the county and take it to the next level. “I will use my knowledge in making connections, networking and collaborating to seek solutions for issues in Mariposa.” says Taber.
Taber looks forward to seeing people at the fair and plans to walk her district before the primary election in March, hearing the voices of the citizens. She asks, “Vote for Taber, I’m your neighbor”.
