First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and California Legislative Women’s Caucus Leadership to Light Up State Buildings in Honor of California’s Nineteenth Amendment Centennial
November 4, 2019 - SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom last Friday issued a proclamation declaring “California Women’s Equality Day,” in recognition of the centennial anniversary of California’s ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment – granting women the right to vote. California ratified the Nineteenth Amendment on November 1, 1919.
California First Partner and Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commissioner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, in partnership with Senator Connie M. Leyva and Assemblymember Monique Limón, Chair and Vice Chair of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, has asked that the California State Capitol, the Library and Courts Building, and the Jesse M. Unruh Building be illuminated in purple and gold to honor women’s suffrage. The buildings will be illuminated from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
“The centennial gives us the opportunity to celebrate the brave suffragists on whose shoulders we stand, and to carry the spirit of the movement forward by fighting for the equality of all women across this state,” said First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
“As Chair of the Women’s Caucus, I celebrate California’s important role in the ratification of the 19th Amendment and know that the Golden State will continue to lead the nation on gender equality and inclusion,” said Senator Connie M. Leyva (D – Chino).

Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom to serve on the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission, which is tasked with commemorating and coordinating the nationwide centennial celebration of the passage and ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment.
