California Statewide Fire Summary for August 28, 2021
August 28, 2021 - As of this morning, fire crews continue to battle 14 major wildfires and three extended attack fires in California, all while remaining vigilant to additional fire potential. More than 15,000 firefighters are on the front lines. Despite rising temperatures, firefighters continue to increase containment efforts on many of the wildfires, including full containment on the Rock Fire in Riverside County. Additionally, fire crews extinguished 34 new initial attack wildfires in California yesterday.
A Red Flag Warning for critical fire weather remains in effect through late Saturday morning for gusty winds and low humidity across the northern and central Sacramento Valley and surrounding foothills stretching from Shasta County down to Colusa County. A Fire Weather Watch has also been issued for Monday afternoon through late Tuesday evening for gusty winds and low humidity for the Tahoe Basin and portions of the eastern Sierra and western Nevada, and portions of northeastern California, stretching from Lassen County down to Placer County.
Across the state, daytime temperatures will remain 5 – 10 degrees above normal, with hot temperatures persisting through the weekend. Additionally, there will be a heightened risk for new lightning starts Sunday through Wednesday, especially with thunderstorms that may form over areas that continue to support critically dry fuels. Smoke continues to impact many northern California communities. An excessive heat warning remains in effect until Sunday evening for the southeast part of the state. Hot and dry conditions will cause the potential for large fire to remain elevated across the region through this weekend.
