October 3, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the KNP Complex Wildfires in Sequoia National Park for Sunday.
Fire: The KNP complex is 60,306 acres and 20% contained. For more information see inciweb.nwcg.gov.
Smoke: A thick blanket of smoke remains in the area for at least the next two days. Expect unhealthy air quality in Fresno, Woodlake, and Visalia, and northwards in the foothills of Madera, Mariposa, and Tuolumne counties. Sierra mountain communities nearest the wildfires will continue to reach "Very Unhealthy" and "Hazardous" categories. Smoke is also increasing East of the Sierra. Gradual improvement may begin Tuesday.
Smoke infiltration from the Windy and KNP Complex fires has prompted air quality officials in the San Joaquin Valley to issue an Air Quality Alert through Monday, October 4.
Pets: Keep pets indoors as much as possible, and keep your windows shut. Let dogs and cats outside only for brief bathroom breaks if air quality alerts are in effect. Birds are particularly susceptible (remember the "canary in a coal mine"). Avoid intense outdoor exercise during periods of poor air quality; exercise pets/horses after smoke has left. Have a pet evacuation kit ready, and include your animals in your disaster preparedness planning. www.avma.org/resources/pet-owners/emergencycare/wildfire-smoke-and-animals
