December 11, 2021 - President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris comment on the Supreme Court ruling on Texas law S.B. 8 to remain in effect.

President Joe Biden:

I am very concerned by the Supreme Court’s decision to allow SB8 to remain in effect in light of the significant consequences that law has for women in Texas and around the country, and for the rule of law. As I have made clear from Day One, I am deeply committed to the constitutional right recognized in Roe v. Wade nearly five decades ago.

While it is encouraging that the Court ruled that part of the providers’ lawsuit may continue, this ruling reinforces that there is so much more work to be done—in Texas, in Mississippi, and in many states around the country where women’s rights are currently under attack. I will continue to work with Congress to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. We have more work to do, but I will always stand with women to protect and defend their long-recognized, constitutional right under Roe v. Wade.

Vice President Kamala Harris:

Vice President’s Ceremonial Office, Eisenhower Executive Office Building

Q    Madam Vice President, on the SCOTUS ruling today, I’m wondering — the Biden administration promised a whole-of-government response to S.B. 8.  So after DOJ’s lawsuit was defeated, what will the Biden administration do next?

THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Well, listen, the ruling today is an attempt to undo — in terms of what’s happening in Texas, Mississippi, and around the country — is an attempt to undo 50 years of precedent.
And as far as I’m concerned and as far as our administration is concerned, a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body is non-negotiable.

And so we will continue to fight for the constitutional right of all women to make decisions about their own body without interference by some legislative group of people that think that they can replace their judgment with hers.
