April 26, 2022 - MADERA - Last Saturday, volunteers and members of the American Red Cross Central Valley Chapter, Madera County Fire Department and United Way of Fresno and Madera Counties installed nearly 100 free smoke alarms for families in Coarsegold, as part of a national Red Cross Sound the Alarm effort to install 50,000 smoke alarms across the country this spring.
“Without everyone coming together to Sound the Alarm, we wouldn’t have been able to help hundreds of vulnerable neighbors in Coarsegold,” said Lori Wilson, Executive Director of the Red Cross Central Valley Chapter. “Home fires are a constant threat to our community, and our efforts on Saturday will make a lasting difference to save lives.”

MAKING LOCAL HOMES SAFER People can register now at SoundTheAlarm.org to install free smoke alarms and share fire safety information with residents at our next Sound the Alarm event in Madera on Saturday, May 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. No prior experience is needed. Training will be provided at John Wells Youth Center before volunteer teams, with members of the Red Cross and Madera City Fire Department visit area homes.
SAVING LIVES FROM NATION’S MOST FREQUENT DISASTER Home fires are the nation’s most frequent disaster, including in the Central Valley where home fires occur every day. This Sound the Alarm event is a critical part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 1,275 lives since launching in October 2014. As part of the campaign in the Central Valley, the Red Cross and local partners have installed more than 10,600 free smoke alarms and made more than 4,479 households safer.
