June 14, 2022 - WASHINGTON - The House Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy will hold a hearing on Wednesday to investigate the Seresto flea collar, which has been flealinked to thousands of pet deaths.

The committee will hear testimony from Nathan Donley, environmental health science director at the Center for Biological Diversity. Donley reviewed thousands of pages of documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act that revealed the Environmental Protection Agency had received nearly 100,000 complaints about harms to pets, as well as to children, but failed to take any action.

Among the issues the committee will explore are why the product was approved in the United States but rejected by Canadian regulators and why the complaints to the EPA’s pesticide incident reporting system have not triggered any substantive action. It will also assess the agency’s review and approval process for all dangerous pesticides.

This hearing comes on the heels of an announcement by the EPA’s Office of Inspector General that it is investigating whether the flea collars can still be used safely and whether the agency adhered to its legal requirements in its approval of the collars.
