June 17, 2022 - Thirty-two large fires have burned 1.6 million acres in five states. Two new large fires were reported yesterday, one in Alaska and one in Texas. More than 7,300 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incident across the United States. To date, 30,449 wildfires have burned 2,990,255 acres.
Critical fire weather conditions are expected this weekend. It will be dry and very windy in Nevada, Utah, and northwest Arizona. Interior Alaska will continue to see very dry fuels. The weekly fuels and fire danger briefing and current advisories are available on the National Interagency Coordination Center Predictive Services website.
Will you be enjoying your public lands this weekend? Nothing feels more cozy and warm than sitting by a campfire and enjoying the night sky. Before lighting one, check fire restrictions in your local area. Use existing fire rings, keep campfires small, and make sure it is completely out and cold to the touch before leaving and going to bed. Please recreate responsibly and do your part to prevent wildfires.
Monsoon moisture will continue to move into the Southwest and Colorado with scattered, mainly wet, thunderstorms. Moisture will not be as robust in eastern Arizona with isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms near and east of Interstate-17. South winds of 15-35 mph with gusts 35-55 mph will continue across eastern Nevada into northwest Arizona and western Utah amid relative humidity of 5-15%. Breezy south winds will develop across much of the central and southern Plains, with the driest and windiest conditions likely across the central High Plains of eastern Colorado, southeast Wyoming, western Nebraska, and far western Kansas. A cold front will move through the Southeast with light precipitation, and post frontal breezy and dry conditions for the southern Appalachians into the Carolinas. Showers and thunderstorms are likely across the Northwest into the Idaho Panhandle and northern California with light to moderate precipitation. http://www.predictiveservices.nifc.gov/outlooks/outlooks.htm
