September 8, 2022 - Seventy-one large fires have burned 496,941 acres in western states. Eight new large incidents were reported yesterday, two in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, and one in Montana and Wyoming. More than 15,100 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country.
Critical windy conditions are forecast for parts of the Great Basin, Northwest, Northern Rockies and California. Excessive heat warnings and heat advisories are in effect for California, Nevada and Oregon. Red flag warnings are in place for hot, dry and windy conditions in parts of Idaho and Wyoming today.
A fuels and fire behavior advisory has been issued for northern California due to dry fuels and the potential fore extreme fire behavior with the hot, dry and windy weather pattern. Active fuels and fire behavior advisories are posted on the Predictive Services fuels and fire danger webpage.
Before wildfire strikes, it is important that you prepare your family and your home for the possibility of having to evacuate. Create a family evacuation plan, prepare an emergency supply kit, and make sure everyone knows the plan. Are your furry family members ready for a wildfire? As you prepare your ‘go kit’, remember these few items for your pets: water/food, medications, leashes, a photo of your pet(s), and a pet carrier to keep them safe.
An upper-level trough will slide southeast into the Northern Rockies as an associated cold front pushes south and east through Montana and Wyoming, mostly along and east of the Divide, and into the northern and central Plains. Ahead of the front, dry and gusty west-northwest winds are likely across central and southern Idaho into southwest Montana and central and southern Wyoming. Gusty southerly winds amid low relative humidity of 8-20% are likely in portions of South Dakota, Nebraska, and southwest Minnesota ahead of the front turning northerly behind it with little increase of relative humidity into the evening. Dry and breezy conditions are also likely in portions of the Inland Northwest. Winds will turn more northerly across the Northwest, Idaho, and Montana and eventually to the northeast or east by the evening and overnight. Hot, dry, and unstable conditions will continue south of the front across California and the southern half of the Intermountain West. Temperatures will cool behind the front with temperatures mostly in the 70s and 80s in much of the Northwest, Idaho, and Montana. Showers with isolated thunderstorms will develop behind the front along and east of the Rockies in Montana into northern Wyoming, northern South Dakota, and central Minnesota. Isolated drier thunderstorms are expected for northeast Utah, central and southern Wyoming, and the greater Four Corners area, with the greatest potential for new ignitions across central and southern Wyoming. Showers and thunderstorms are likely along the Gulf Coast and in the Southeast.
