March 4, 2023 - Mariposa County officials report that the County's goal of plowing roadways is to remove snow from public streets, opening the road for emergency and residential vehicles. With significant snowfall, this becomes an even bigger priority. Plows will typically make one pass to open the road and then will return to widen the road as close to the shoulders as possible.
Snowplows and equipment push snow from the road to the driver's right side. This does result in snow piling up along the road's side, including driveways. Large snow removal equipment like the County utilizes works by pushing snow, directing it to the driver's right side and cannot "turn" snow away from driveways.
What can you do to help?
- Be kind to our plow operators. They are not pushing the snow into your driveway on purpose.
- You can lessen the amount of snow pushed back into the driveway by clearing snow from the right-hand side (when on the road facing the driveway, left-hand side when on the driveway facing the road). See the image from the City of Groton in Connecticut.
