May 18, 2023 - Fresno Police Department officials report that on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at 1:49 A.M., officers from the Central Policing District responded FPD homicide Castanedato the 600 block of North Fresno Street for two Shot Spotter activations indicating multiple rounds fired at the location. Officers arrived and found 45-year-old Nathaniel Castaneda on the ground in front of the location, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) where he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. While on scene, officers located another shooting victim on White Avenue, west of Fresno Street. The second shooting victim, 33-year-old Montray Skinner, was transported to CRMC where he received treatment for a single gunshot wound to his upper body.

Through their investigation, detectives learned Mr. Skinner confronted another male at the location. FPD Castaneda victimDuring the confrontation, Mr. Skinner removed a handgun from his pocket and began shooting towards the other male, who was standing next to Mr. Castaneda. During the shooting, Mr. Castaneda was struck multiple times by gunfire. Mr. Skinner, who was struck by return gunfire, ran from the location, but was found a short distance away from the scene by officers. During a search of the surrounding area, detectives located a semi- automatic firearm used by Mr. Skinner during the shooting.

Mr. Skinner, who is still being treated at CRMC, was arrested for PC 187(a)-Murder and a felony Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) violation warrant that was issued in February 2023.
