July 1, 2023 - Fresno County Sheriff's Office officials report that around 4:00 p.m. on Friday, deputies were dispatched to a home on the 5600 block of S. Waverly Ln. in southeast Fresno.  There was a report of a man armed with a knife who was trying to attack his family members.  Once the deputy arrived, he learned the suspect had fled the house.

About 10 minutes later, our EAGLE One helicopter arrived and spotted a man matching the suspect's description walking through the shopping center on the northeast corner of Kings Canyon Rd. & Clovis Ave.  The suspect was carrying a large tree branch.  A deputy in a patrol car arrived and contacted the man, ordering him to drop the branch and surrender.  The suspect refused and ran at the deputy, utilizing the branch as a weapon.  The deputy retreated and then fired multiple shots at the suspect once he closed in on the deputy.  The suspect was struck.  Deputies and firefighters approached and provided medical aid, but the suspect died in the lot just outside a Valero gas station.

The name of the suspect is not available for release.  No law enforcement members were injured.

The Fresno Police Department is assisting the Fresno County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.
