February 24, 2024 – After a halt of activities due to the pandemic, the John C. Fremont Hospital Foundation (JCFHF) announces the return of its JCF butterflycommunity health grants program and training scholarships for Healthcare District staff.

“As part of re-building our capacity as an organization this past year,” said Giving Committee Chair Jill Harry, “we have taken a fresh look at our funding guidelines. We now want to make sure the community knows what we have available to them.”

Community Health Grants can be up to $1,000. Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) organizations, Tribes, or public agencies and must benefit people either served by JCFHD or residing within the jurisdiction of the JCFHD, which is Mariposa County.

“With the implementation of CalAIM by the State of California,” said Heather Bernikoff, Foundation President, “the Healthcare District will need to work even more closely with community partners to achieve the health goals required by the Department of Healthcare Services.”

Bernikoff continued, “Although small, we hope these grants will help community partners in advancing their health work.”

Another program re-established is Training Scholarships for JCFHD staff.

“In addition to scholarship awards for graduating high school seniors,” said Harry, “We offer scholarships to District staff to advance their skills and training which improves quality of care.”

The Foundation is anticipating providing up to $1000 in support to offset training costs and may increase available funding depending on the demand.

Because the District already provides for some training for staff, Foundation funds are focused more on training and/or materials and equipment not otherwise covered. Applicants must provide a rationale for the need to attend training, a conference, or the materials or equipment they need. Applicants must also discuss what benefit or deliverable they will bring back to JCFHD, their project, or their work in general.

“We are excited to again be able to offer these additional resources to JCFHD staff and the community,” said Harry. “Last year, we awarded three $1,000 scholarships to Mariposa County High School graduating seniors pursuing healthcare careers.”

“We have awarded several grants to the Healthcare District this past year, as well,” continued Harry. “For instance, the Foundation sponsored the Hospice Ceremony of Lights event to acknowledge the passing of Hospice patients, gave $17,000 to the District to replace outdated neonatal equipment, and $7,000 towards a new defibrillator to replace a broken one in its outpatient services procedure area.”

Bernikoff added, “None of this would be possible without the support of the community for which we are incredibly grateful.”

To apply for grant funding, JCFHD staff and interested community nonprofits should contact the Foundation at jcfhospitalfoundation@gmail.com for a copy of the funding guidelines and application.

While applications can be sent by regular mail to the Foundation, it is best to submit completed applications by email.

Grant applications are reviewed by the Giving Committee and recommendations are brought to the full Board for discussion and vote. For all but high school senior scholarships, the Giving Committee operates on a rolling deadline. Applications received will be processed, discussed at a Giving Committee meeting, and presented at the next regularly scheduled full Board meeting.

JCFHF was founded in 1980 with the specific purpose of supporting the John C. Fremont Healthcare District (JCFHD) with the procurement and extension of financial aid toward the operation, maintenance, and modernization of the facilities of JCFHD, as well as to provide the greatest amount of healthcare services to the greatest number of people either served by JCFHD or residing within the jurisdiction of the District, and to carry on other charitable and educational activities and events associated with this goal as allowed by law.
