June 13, 2024 – Fresno County Sheriff's Office issues water safety warning.
The warm weather is already here and more people are heading to the lakes and rivers to cool off.
Make smart choices to keep everyone safe.
1.) Use a life vest approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. UU. Make sure it's insured and fits the person properly.
2.) Stay out of the water unless you are an experienced swimmer.
3.) Parents should keep an eye on their children at all times.
4.) Don't mix alcohol and swimming. Alcohol causes swimmers to get tired faster than usual and can create dangerous situations.
5.) Understand that when it gets hot outside you will get tired faster than usual.
6.) Respect the water. The water temperature remains cold and the current is usually stronger than it appears. There may be debris in the water, which is hard to see and can cause dangerous situations for swimmers.
7.) Beware of the mud at the bottom of lakes and rivers, it is easy to sink in some spots and get your feet stuck. Also, use your feet to feel the drop points. River and lake bottoms can change dramatically from shallow to shallow within a short distance.
