June 17, 2024 - 12 new large incidents were reported over the weekend, and a total of 17 large, uncontained fires are currently being managed under full suppression firefighters credit nifcstrategies, while 8 are being managed with strategies other than full suppression. Much of the new fire activity is in California, including the Post Fire, which is currently exhibiting extreme fire behavior, prompting evacuations and closures. A complex incident management team is assigned.

To date, 18,594 wildfires have burned 2,085,164 acres nationwide in 2024. This is fewer total fires, but more total acres than the 10-year averages.

The national predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for June through September. For additional information about the current outlook visit the Outlook page on the NICC site

During the past decade, we have seen hotter and more destructive wildfires. These blazes result from a mix of conditions. Buildup of fuels such as dead trees and brush combines with drought to create a tinderbox, and especially in steep topography, this can quickly lead to extreme fire behavior. We cannot stop the hot weather and lightning storms, but we can do our part to be fire wise when we are recreating, traveling, or staying home. Take the time to find out the weather conditions and fire danger where you live and plan to vacation. Get the information you need about current wildland fire danger and be prepared. Weather

A trough of low pressure deepens over the western United States today, keeping temperatures well below normal for the northwestern states. A chance of scattered showers is forecast for much of the area with snow possible for the high elevations of Central Idaho and Western Montana. A higher likelihood for thunderstorms and wetting rain exists across the Northern and Central Great Plains and into the Great Lakes region as well as across parts of the Gulf Coast north into the Tennessee River Valley. Seasonably normal temperatures will persist over much of the Southwest where elevated to critical fire weather conditions are predicted for most of Arizona, the southern Great Basin, western New Mexico and far southern California due to an increase in southwesterly flow and low relative humidity. Portions of the southern Sierra Nevada and western Nevada will also reach critical levels due to strong winds and poor overnight humidity recoveries. Well above normal temperatures are anticipated for the central Plains, upper Midwest and into the Ohio Valley. Conditions will be warm and dry across the interior of Alaska today, with the potential for showers and thunderstorms limited mainly to south central and southwest Alaska.
