To err is human, but when it comes to wildfires, human error can lead to mass destruction. Each year, thousands of fires in the United States are caused by people. The major causes of these fires are from loss of control of debris burning; unattended and improperly extinguished or not extinguished campfires; and sparks or heat transfer from the use of vehicles and equipment like chain saws or recreational vehicles including trailers. Southerly flow will bring moisture out of the Gulf of Mexico across the southern Plains and into eastern New Mexico and eastern Colorado today, increasing relative humidity in those areas over recent days and inducing widely scattered showers, thunderstorms and wetting rains. Along the western edge of the main plume of moisture, isolated dry thunderstorms are possible over west New Mexico and far eastern Arizona. Surface winds in northwestern New Mexico will also be strong with sustained speeds upwards of 20 mph this afternoon. The moisture from the Gulf will also produce thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over the Gulf Coast and the southern half of Texas, while another band of scattered thunderstorms extends across Kansas and the Middle Mississippi Valley. Elsewhere across the west, temperatures will rebound toward seasonably normal, with the Pacific Northwest reach slightly above normal as high pressure begins to rebuild across the region. An intense heat wave will persist in the Northeast and Great Lakes Region, and strong easterly winds may develop over northern Florida. Alaska will continue under warm and dry conditions today with high temperatures across the interior reaching the high 70s and into the 80s in some areas and relative humidity reaching the 20-30%. Isolated thunderstorms are possible across the interior through this evening, with widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms and frequent lightning over the eastern interior.
