Since firefighters credit nifcJanuary 1, 29,132 wildfires have burned 4,678,064 acres in the United States. While the number of wildfires is slightly below the 10-year average, the number of acres burned is above the average of 3,838,812 acres.

Nearly 30,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to wildfires, including 24 complex and 4 Type 1 incident management teams, 652 crews, 1,717 engines, 180 helicopters, and six Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems, or MAFFS.

Evacuation orders are in effect on 20 wildfires. If you live in an area that has been evacuated, please follow the instructions from local authorities. They will provide the latest recommendations based on the threat to your community and appropriate safety measures. If you are concerned about the potential for evacuation or other disaster impacts, ready.gov can help you get plans in place.

On August 1, predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for August through November. For additional information about the current outlook visit the Outlook page on the NICC site

A new fuels and fire behavior advisory has been issued for Colorado's Front Range and Eastern Wyoming. There are already advisories in place for Southwest Oregon, the region east of the Cascades in Oregon and WashingtonNevadaSouthern IdahoUtah, and California. Residents, travelers, or workers on their way to any of these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks.

With large wildfires burning in 12 states, it's important to have an evacuation plan in place for your family and pets. Do you know the 6 Ps for evacuation when a wildfire is in the area?

  • People and pets
  • Papers, phone numbers, and essential documents
  • Prescriptions, vitamins, and eyeglasses
  • Pictures and irreplaceable memorabilia
  • Personal computer hard drives and disks
  • “Plastic” (credit cards, ATM cards) and cash

Having the 6 Ps part of your Wildfire Action Plan will help when leaving your house quickly.

Weather

A drier southwesterly flow will continue across the Inland Northwest into northern California and the western Great Basin amid above normal temperatures. Breezy and dry southwest winds of 12-20 mph with gusts 20-35 mph amid relative humidity of 8-20% will develop across these areas creating locally elevated conditions, strongest through the Cascade gaps, in northern California, and along the Sierra Front. Isolated dry thunderstorms will develop this morning across southeast Washington into the Idaho Panhandle, with isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms developing in the afternoon across northeast Nevada into central Idaho, far northeast Oregon, western Montana, and western Wyoming. Farther south, isolated to scattered mainly wet thunderstorms will develop in Arizona, western New Mexico, eastern Great Basin, and Colorado Rockies. Dry and hot southerly flow will increase across the southern Plains with winds of 10-20 mph gusting to 20-30 mph amid minimum relative humidity of 10-25%. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely in the northern Plains through the Great Lakes to the Northeast behind a cold front, with strong, but moist northerly winds across the central Plains behind the front. Heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding are likely from north Florida into Georgia and South Carolina due to Hurricane Debby, with storm surge flooding in northwest Florida as well.
