August 23, 2024 - Right now, 56 large active wildfires are being managed with full suppression strategies nationwide. These wildfires have burned 2,060,058 acres. About firefighters credit nifc18,900 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to wildfires, including 21 complex and 2 Type 1 incident management teams, 450 crews, 760 engines, 107 helicopters, and four Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems, or MAFFS.

If your weekend plans include getting out and enjoying our public lands, it is critical for you to be fire safe. Have spark arresters on equipment and vehicles like chain saws, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. Exhaust systems on any vehicle can easily ignite vegetation, so drive and park in designated areas keeping off and away from dry grass and brush. Taking these simple steps can keep you and our natural resources from going up in smoke.

Sixty fireline management personnel from Australia and New Zealand are assigned to support large fires in the Northwest Area. For more information about the mobilization of wildland firefighters from Australia and New Zealand visit the international support page.

Two hundred forty-five soldiers from the 14th Brigade Engineer Battalion and the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment based out of Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) are deployed in support of wildland fire operations on the Boise National Forest. NIMO (Team 2) is assigned to support the military contingent. To learn more about military mobilizations, visit the military support page.

There are fuels and fire behavior advisories in place for Northwest TexasColorado's Front Range and Eastern Wyoming, Southwest Oregon, the region east of the Cascades in Oregon and Washington, and California. Residents, travelers, or workers on their way to any of these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks.

Note: The current reporting from source data for year-to-date figures appears to be underreporting fire acreage in some geographic areas affecting the overall national statistics. Given the very high tempo and scale of national current fire activity, there will be delays in reconciling, especially from areas with large fires and dynamic fire activity. Adjustments may occur as the accuracy of fire locations, mapping and final fire reporting is reconciled.

Weather

South to southwest winds of 15-30 mph with gusts of 30 to 50 mph amid relative humidity of 5-20% are expected across much of the Great Basin today. Above normal temperatures and minimum relative humidity below 25 percent are likely to continue east of the Divide in the Southwest into the Southern Plains. Mixed wet/dry storms are forecast east of the Cascades in the Northwest eastward into parts of the Northern Rockies. Showers will persist from the Cascades westward, with snow possible above 8,000 feet, along with cooler temperatures and high humidity providing continued relief. Monsoon moisture will continue to prevail across Arizona, the southeastern Great Basin, New Mexico west of the Divide, and Colorado for scattered to widespread wet thunderstorms. Temperatures in the southern Plains will remain above normal with afternoon relative humidity as low as 15% and southerly winds of 12-20 mph and gusts 20-25. In addition, slightly increased moisture in central Texas will lead to isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms for likely new ignitions. In the Deep South, very dry conditions with relative humidity as low as 30% will continue. Dry air will remain in place across the Appalachians and Ohio Valley with temperatures warming to above normal levels.
