Prescribed Fire Update from the Sierra National Forest
November 23, 2024 – The Sierra National Forest (SNF) has begun winter and spring prescribed burning. Collectively, burn projects are expected to span nearly 4,000 acres across Fresno, Madera, and Mariposa Counties to manage forest fuels and enhance safety. This initiative, planned through March 2025, aims to improve ecosystem health and protect nearby communities from wildfires.
Burning will occur in various areas across both Ranger Districts. Work will be performed primarily during the week to reduce smoke impact, although some operations may take place on weekends. Smoke and flames may be visible during burns, however, signage will be posted to keep you informed.
Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution when traveling near burn sites and refrain from reporting controlled burns via the 9-1-1 emergency system. There could temporary reductions in air quality. Information is available at www.airnow.gov and www.valleyair.org.
All burn projects are coordinated with local air pollution control districts and the National Weather Service for optimal weather conditions and smoke dispersion.
