Rest Area, Lane & Ramp Closures 
Interstate 5 and State Routes 59, 99, 140, & 165 

March 14, 2025 – MERCED COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform various closures on Interstate 5 (I-5), and State Route 59 (SR-59), SR-99, SR-140, & SR-165 for maintenance and construction operations. Work is scheduled to occur as follows: 

INTERSTATE 5 

  • Full closure of the John C. Erreca Rest Areas on northbound and southbound I-5 beginning Monday, April 4, 2022, through May 31, 2025. 

o ALTERNATE LOCATIONS: Motorists are advised to use the Coalinga-Avenal Rest Area (Fresno/Kings County line). 

STATE ROUTE 59 

  • Long-term lane/shoulder closures northbound and southbound 16th Street Bridge for bridge work beginning Monday, February 10 at 8:00 p.m. through Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:00 p.m. 

STATE ROUTE 99 

  • One-way traffic control on the East Atwater Over-Head from Atwater Blvd./Shaffer Road to south of East Atwater Over-Head / Atwater Blvd. for bridge inspection work on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 
  • One-way traffic control on the East Atwater Over-Head from Railroad Ave./Shaffer Road to Commerce Ave./Railroad Ave. for bridge inspection work on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 
  • One-way traffic control on the Childs Avenue Over-Crossing for bridge work beginning Wednesday, March 19, through Friday, March 21, 2025, from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
  • On and off-ramp lane closures on northbound SR-99 at the Franklin Road Overcrossing for utility work on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

STATE ROUTE 140 

  • Long-term one-way traffic control at the Los Banos Creek for bridge work beginning Monday, August 5, at 6:00 a.m. through Monday, March 31, 2025, at 6:00 a.m. 
  • One-way traffic control at the San Joaquin River for bridge work beginning Monday, March 17, through Thursday, March 20, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

STATE ROUTE 165 

  • One-way traffic control from Wolfsen Road to Salt Slough Bridge for sign work on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

Motorists should expect 5-10 minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. This work is scheduled to take place as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or construction related issues.
