June 21, 2025 – Grass Valley, CA – Nevada County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on June 19, 2025, just after Nevada County Sheriff Office logomidnight, Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) Patrol Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance on South Ponderosa Way following a 9-1-1 call from a woman reporting she was being followed in a vehicle by her male acquaintance as she attempted to leave his residence, and that the man had made threats and brandished a gun at her. The suspect, later identified as Sergio Aguilar, age 46 of Grass Valley, was reportedly driving alongside the victim as she walked down the road. At that time, an uninvolved man heard yelling as he drove past Aguilar and noticed the woman on the side of the road in distress and stopped to help. The victim, who had remained on the line with a dispatcher from the Nevada County Regional Dispatch Center while this was occurring, accepted a ride from the kind stranger who drove her away from the area to meet the arriving NCSO Deputies.

Upon speaking with a deputy, the victim reported that Aguilar became upset when she wanted to leave his residence. She stated that as she was trying to arrange a ride, Aguilar made threats to shoot anyone that tried to pick her up. The victim became fearful and left walking when Aguilar got into his vehicle and began following her. While driving alongside the victim, Aguilar reportedly brandished a handgun several times before pointing the gun directly at the victim, prior to driving away.

Deputies continued the investigation and upon identifying Aguilar, learned that he was prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction, as well as being the subject of an active domestic violence restraining order. NCSO deputies responded to the suspect’s South Ponderosa Way residence, where he was contacted and arrested for brandishing and assault with a firearm, then booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.

Subsequently, the investigating deputy sought and was granted a search warrant for Aguilar’s residence. Upon execution of the search warrant, the gun believed to be used in the incident was located, in addition to magazines and ammunition. The search also yielded cocaine, a digital scale, and packaging materials typically used in narcotics sales. Furthermore, it was learned that Aguilar had recently been released on bail in a separate domestic violence arrest, adding another charge of committing a felony while released on bail in addition to the new firearms and drug charges stemming from the search warrant. Aguilar remains in jail custody with a bail of $100,000 for his current charges.
