In Loving Memory of K9 Apex

June 27, 2025 – Madera County Sheriff's Office officials sadly announce the passing of retired K9 Apex.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired Madera County Sheriff’s K9 Apex, who died on June 16, 2025.

K9 Apex served our community with distinction from 2017 to 2021, faithfully protecting his handler, Deputy Mark Schafer, and helping in numerous suspect apprehensions. Apex was more than a working dog—he was a partner, a protector, and a true hero.

One moment that truly reflected Apex’s heart came when he comforted a young boy at Valley Children’s Hospital whose wish was to meet a real K9. Apex climbed onto the bed, laid beside him, and offered his quiet strength during the boy’s final days.

“Apex wasn’t just a K9—he was family,” said retired Deputy Schafer. “He was my best friend and the most loyal partner I ever had.”

Sheriff Tyson Pogue added, “Every uniform in our agency represents a promise—to serve, to lead, and to never look away when duty calls. K9 Apex lived that promise every day.”

Thank you for your loyalty, bravery, and heart, K9 Apex. You will never be forgotten.
