“We need to make sure that environmental conservation remains top of mind while we work to ensure Tahoe is prepared to manage visitation, and I believe we can balance the two and keep Tahoe blue. There is a lot of work to be done to ensure Lake Tahoe in its natural splendor can be enjoyed for generations to come. Work that will be done by Democrats and Republicans,” said Senator Schiff at the Lake Tahoe Summit.

August 10, 2025 - Lake Tahoe, CA – Last week, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) hosted the 29th annual Lake Tahoe Summit, “Protecting Lake Tahoe: Balancing Sustainable Recreation and Conservation.” The Summit honored the legacy of former California Senator Dianne Feinstein, who created the Summit in 1997 with former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
During the main program on Wednesday, Senator Schiff highlighted Senator Feinstein’s legacy in protecting and preserving Lake Tahoe for generations to come. Schiff emphasized that protecting the environment, improving fire response, addressing the insurance crisis, and balancing outdoor recreation and conservation are key priorities to help safeguard Lake Tahoe.
“This remarkable area, ninety percent of which is publicly owned, must – must – remain accessible and enjoyable, even as we work diligently to preserve its natural wonders for future generations. And as we honor Senator Feinstein’s extraordinary legacy, let us remember the responsibility we share to protect Lake Tahoe’s beauty and resilience — not just for ourselves, but for our children and their children,” said Senator Schiff at the Lake Tahoe Summit.
“From forest health and wildfire preparedness to tackling aquatic invasive species and water clarity, Senator Feinstein’s unwavering commitment has shaped Lake Tahoe’s environmental resilience for over a quarter of a century. It’s a legacy I will strive to honor every single day,” Senator Schiff continued.
Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen (both D-Nev.), California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Washoe Tribe Chairman Serrell Smokey, and Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo joined Senator Schiff at the Summit to emphasize that environmental conservation remains a top priority as they work with local, state, and federal leaders to seek resources to preserve Lake Tahoe. The keynote speech was delivered by Academy-Award nominated actor and Lake Tahoe resident Jeremy Renner.
On Thursday, Schiff joined the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Tahoe City Public Utility District, and Tahoe Fund to unveil the plaque and officially dedicate the West Shore Tahoe Trail in memory of Senator Feinstein, who spent her summers horseback riding and camping near the trail.
On Tuesday, Schiff toured UC Davis’ research vessel, the John LeConte, to learn about their efforts to help keep Tahoe blue. UC Davis is home to the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) and have been conducting research on Lake Tahoe since 1958.
