High-Country Health Food and Cafe in Mariposa California

August 22, 2025 – Calaveras County Sheriff's Office officials report that on August 14th, 2025, at approximately 2:00 A.M., Calaveras County Sheriff logodeputies responded to a Gas Station in Murphys regarding a report of a verbal altercation involving two individuals who were reported to be unruly and causing a disturbance. It was further reported that an employee was being threatened, and one of the suspects had brandished a knife during the incident. Further reports indicated that the suspects appeared to be heavily intoxicated prior to leaving the scene in their vehicle.

A license plate for the suspect’s vehicle was obtained during the incident and quickly reported to responding deputies. This information was also shared with the California Highway Patrol, who later located the vehicle in the area of Highway 4 in Murphys. The two suspects were detained and admitted to being inside the gas station and involved in the altercation. CHP conducted a DUI investigation, which confirmed that the driver (Marco Emmanuel Delgadillo-Moncayo) of the vehicle was beyond the legal limit to safely operate a motor vehicle.

During the investigation, it was determined that both suspects became extremely angry after they were told they could not purchase alcoholic beverages due to their current levels of intoxication. It was during that time that one of the suspects exited the store. While the suspect stood outside, he turned around and held a knife up and verbally threatened physical harm to the employee.

Suspect Marco Emmanuel Delgadillo-Moncayo was ultimately arrested, transported to the Calaveras County Jail, and charged with driving under the influence DUI (misdemeanor), criminal threats (felony), exhibiting a deadly weapon (misdemeanor), and being an unlicensed driver (misdemeanor). Suspect Ismael Hernandez-Martinez was arrested and charged with public intoxication (misdemeanor).

We would like to thank the California Highway Patrol for their quick response in locating the vehicle, assisting with the investigation, and ensuring that the driver, who was not fit to operate a motor vehicle, was safely removed from the roadway. We also want to thank the gas station employees for recognizing that the suspects were intoxicated and refusing to sell them additional alcoholic beverages. California law prohibits these types of sales to anyone who appears intoxicated. This is an important step that helps keep both the public and employees safe.
