In 1998, Jackie and Ed Hibbler began a creative writing class at Merced Junior College and the class covered Memoirs only. The point of the class was to assist people in exploring their memories and writing their life stories. Students were encouraged to write short stories and then read them in the class. No emphasis was placed on grammar or publication.
In 2005, the Hibblers moved away from the Yosemite area and Joyce Stuhr, a credentialed teacher, was able to pick up the reins.
Each student writes a piece about two pages long (or 5 minutes of reading time) and shares their writings with the class. Joyce says the class includes a member who has worked in mining all over the world. The group has learned about Panama, horse ranching, boarding school, Alaska, hiking the Sierra and all manner of life adventures. Many of the members have belonged to the group for 10 years or more.
Most members write so they can pass their memories to their family members. Some have made scrapbooks and others have self-published their stories.
The group meets at the Presbyterian Church in Oakhurst every Friday morning (9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and the group will be at library event on September 20th. They will share their stories with the audience and answer questions from those interested in the class.
