Update: Homicide Investigation - Border
August 1, 2023 – San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials report that on July 28, 2023, at about 1:30 A.M., the Sheriff's Department was notified by Cal-Fire of a shooting that occurred in San Diego near the border with Mexico. The shooting occurred in a rural area east of the Otay Port of Entry. Cal-Fire located the surviving victim on a road along the border wall. His name is not being released at this time.
Attempts to identify the deceased male victim have been unsuccessful, but we are continuing our efforts. The Medical Examiner's Office has completed an autopsy and determined the preliminary cause of death was gunshot; the manner of death was homicide.
No suspects have been identified. At this stage of the investigation, the nature of the relationship between the victims and potential suspect(s) is unclear. The motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation.
