Update: Homicide in Spring Valley
August 4, 2023 - San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at around 10:06 p.m., deputies received a radio call of a shooting in 2700 
block of Central Avenue in Spring Valley. The reporting party heard several gunshots and found an adult male, later identified as 25-year-old Fernando Kevin Villegas, in the middle of the street. He was suffering from several gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Deputies and medical personnel provided medical aid, but he succumbed to his injuries. Additionally, another adult male, later identified as 22-year-old Kaulana "Dustin" Hernandez Liu, arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm. Liu was treated at the hospital and later released.
Liu and Villegas arrived at the location because a friend of theirs was hosting a party. When they got out of their vehicle there was a group of people standing in the area. Almost immediately, Liu and Villegas were shot by one of the members of that group. The suspect was later identified as 20-year-old Trevion G'shon Austin. Austin is a documented Eastside Piru gang member on juvenile probation for stabbing a victim. On August 1, 2023, he was arrested by the Sheriff's Department for PC 187(A) – Murder and PC 664-187(A) – Attempt Murder.
At this stage of the investigation, the nature of the relationship between the victims and any potential suspect(s) is unclear. The motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation.
