On June 1, 2017, President Trump announced his intention to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement – making the United States the only country to reject the climate accords.

June 9, 2019 - WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) last Wednesday joined Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Tom Carper (D-DE), along with 39 of their colleagues, in directing the Trump administration to meet the standards established by the historic Paris Climate Agreement and to mitigate the long-term damage caused by the Trump administration’s anti-environment actions. The International Climate Accountability Act – would prevent the President from using funds to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. Instead, the bill directs the Trump administration to develop a strategic plan for the country to meet its commitment under the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, which the United States joined with nearly 200 other nations. The bill also makes clear that the Paris Climate Agreement is critical to strengthening international cooperation to reduce global greenhouse emissions and hold high-emission nations accountable, and recognizes the important role the Agreement plays in protecting and advancing U.S. economic interests and foreign policy priorities around the globe.

“The administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement threatens the health of our environment and economy and severely damages our nation’s standing as a global leader,” said Senator Harris. “If this administration won’t act to address the existential threat of climate change, Congress must use its authority to direct the administration to take action to preserve our planet and protect future generations.”
