January 31, 2024 - Fresno County Sheriff’s Office officials report that during the week of January 22, 2024, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Training Unit deployed 56 body worn cameras into the field. Users include deputies and sergeants assigned to patrol, along with those in specialty assignments such as the Civil Unit, Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium (MAGEC) and the Adult Compliance Team (ACT).
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office secured a $430,000 grant in October 2022, which was used to obtain and introduce body worn cameras into the field. There was a purchase of 215 Axon Body 3 cameras, a cost totaling approximately $3 million. This includes the hardware, software, licensing, storage, maintenance, training, and field deployment. The cameras generate high-definition video, clear audio and can transcribe conversations during the upload process. This new equipment will allow for greater deputy safety, public transparency and improve investigative work.
Only approximately 25% of our cameras have been deployed in an effort to better learn their capabilities and pass that knowledge along to future users. The goal is to have all cameras deployed in the field by the end of 2024.
