Search and Rescue Winter Training

February 29, 2024 - Calaveras County Sheriff's Office officials report that on February 17th, 2024, the Calaveras County Volunteer Search and Rescue Team (SAR) performed their annual Winter Survival Training. During this training, the team practiced skills such as shelter building and improvising hypothermic wraps (a way to keep someone warm in the backcountry). They also focused on avalanche training, including beacons, probing, and rescue techniques. The skills learned will be put to task when the members attend their annual winter overnight scenario-based training in a few weeks.

If you are interested in volunteering with the Search and Rescue Team or would like additional information regarding membership, please visit Calverassar.org. You can also follow SAR on Facebook @Calaverassearchandrescue.  All skill levels are welcome, and all necessary training is provided.

WINTER SAFETY TIPS:

  1. Dress in layers: wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid layers, and a waterproof outer layer to stay warm and dry.
  2. Carry emergency supplies: pack a first aid kit, emergency blanket, more than one fire starting or ignition source, water, high-energy snacks, snow shovel, and a multi-tool in case of unexpected situations.
  3. Stay hydrated: drink plenty of water. Dehydration can occur even in cold environments. If possible, try to drink warm liquids. The warm liquid will help maintain your core body temperature.
  4. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia: learn the symptoms and be vigilant in checking for these conditions in yourself and others.
  5. User proper equipment: Wear traction devices on your boots, use trekking poles for stability, and carry a headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries.
  6. Communicate your plans: inform someone of your intended route and expected return time before leaving your residence.
  7. Be aware of avalanche risks: check the local avalanche forecast, https://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/forecasts, and carry avalanche safety equipment when venturing into avalanche-prone areas.
  8. Keep an eye on the weather, be prepared for sudden changes, and heed weather warnings to avoid hazardous conditions.
  9. Know your limits: respect your physical abilities and the potential danger of winter environments, and don’t hesitate to turn back if the conditions become too challenging.
  10. Seek training: consider taking a winter safety course to learn essential skills for navigating and preparedness related to emergencies in cold weather.
