Snow Season Safety: Snow and High Wind Preparedness

March 1, 2024 - As another storm is expected to impact large parts of California starting Thursday, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is mobilizing first responders to help keep residents safe.

THE FORECAST: According to the National Weather Service, a significant weather system will impact the state starting Thursday, bringing with it moderate to heavy rainfall, significant mountain snow and gusty winds. A blizzard warning has been issued for the Northern Sierra Nevada mountains from Thursday February 29^th through Sunday, March 3^rd. Potential impacts of this system include difficult to impossible travel, periods of white out conditions, and near zero visibility in some locations.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: Cal OES reminds all Californians of the importance they play in keeping themselves and others safe. If you must travel prepare a car emergency kit and check your route to ensure it is passable and take steps to keep yourself safe.

Road conditions and routes are subject to change as quickly as the weather does, especially after serious weather impacts. Planning your routes ahead of time can help you avoid closures. CAR EMERGENCY KIT: In case you get stranded, keep an emergency supply kit in your car with these necessities:

Jumper cables
Flares or reflective triangle
Portable phone charger
Blanket
Map
Non-perishable snacks
First aid kit

High winds are also a factor in this upcoming snowstorm, with strong gusts forecasted. Impacts like power outages, tree downing, and property damage can occur throughout California.

DURING A HIGH WIND EVENT:   

Take cover next to a building or under shelter.
Stay clear of roadways and train tracks, a gust may blow you into danger.
Use handrails when available on outdoor walkways.
Avoid elevated areas such as roofs.
