May 7, 2024 - Madera County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) officials report that on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at around 1:00 p.m., the Madera County Sheriff’s Communication Center received a call of an injured hiker on the Horseshoe Bend trail near Kirchoff Lake. A group of friends from the Fresno/Clovis area were hiking the Horseshoe Bend trail when one of the hikers, a 59-year-old female, slipped and possibly broke her ankle.
MCSO Search and Rescue teams were notified and immediately responded to the trailhead. Members from Cal-Fire, American Ambulance, Sierra National Forest Law Enforcement and Madera County Fire responded to the scene, along with CHP H40 helicopter. The hike in to the patient and their party was approximately 2.75 miles from the trailhead.
While ground units started hiking in with medical equipment, H40 was able to find a level meadow close to the area and safely land. The crew of H40 made contact with the group and stabilized the patient. They were able to get her to the helicopter with the help of her friends. She was then flown to a local regional hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Sheriff Tyson Pogue remarks, “This search and rescue operation required the coordination of multiple agencies and resources, and its successful outcome is a reflection of the collaboration and dedication these teams provide. We are particularly grateful for our partnership with the California Highway Patrol, who regularly supports our missions with their H40 helicopter, and is a critical component in ensuring the safety and security of our community.”
