Weather

Hot and dry conditions will prevail across much of the west today as high pressure rebuilds over the area, with temperatures 5 to 15 degrees above normal, on the higher end over the Pacific Northwest and northern California. The exception will be across the eastern Arizona, New Mexico, western Texas, and southern Colorado, which will have cooler, wetter conditions. Moisture will circulate out of the Gulf of Mexico to bring heavy rain to much of the Gulf Coast and southern Plains, while scattered storms with wetting rain develop across much of New Mexico and the central Rockies. A slight chance of dry lightning exists along the edge of the moister air mass in eastern Arizona. An area of thunderstorms with heavy precipitation is also possible over northeastern New Mexico and the Texas panhandle into southern Kansas. Additional isolated to scattered thunderstorm activity is forecast over the High Plains into the Great Lakes region and to a lesser extent over the northeastern United States. Alaska will continue under warm and dry conditions today, with the chance for afternoon thunderstorm across the Interior and wetting rain over much of the southeast Interior and southwest Alaska.
