June 26, 2024 - Currently, 42 large wildfires are burning, 19 uncontained large fires being fully suppressed, and 23 being managed under
strategies other than full suppression. Approximately 6,400 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country. Complex incident management teams are assigned to the South Fork and Salt Fires in New Mexico, the Pioneer Fire in Washington, and the Oak Ridge Fire in Colorado. A type 1 incident management team is assigned to the Post Fire in California.
A fuels and fire behavior advisory has been issued for California that highlights abnormally high fine fuel loading across the state. These abundant fuels increase the risk of wildfires spreading quickly, even without strong winds. It's imperative that we all do our part to recreate responsibly and prevent wildfires.
The national predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for June through September. For additional information about the current outlook visit the Outlook page on the NICC site.
As we approach the most firework-heavy holiday weekend of the summer, remember: Fireworks have no place on your public lands. Even consumer fireworks carry serious risks. Sparklers, which may seem child-safe, burn as hot as 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and can cause third-degree burns. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks - burns, other injuries, wildfires, and even death. We all play a role in safety. Scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will be ongoing this morning across the Inland Northwest into the northern Great Basin, and continue into the afternoon across Washington, the northern and central Rockies, and northeastern Great Basin. Some of the thunderstorms will continue overnight across much of Utah into the northern Rockies. Drier air will move into the western Great Basin and eastern Oregon during the day and combine with gusty westerly winds to produce elevated to locally critical fire weather conditions, with breezy winds into the Columbia Basin and northern California as well. Well above normal temperatures are likely to continue across the southern Plains into the Southeast, with areas of minimum relative humidity below 35% in the Southeast. Isolated to scattered wet thunderstorms will develop in the Southwest, while showers and thunderstorms develop along a cold front in the Lower Mississippi and Ohio Valleys into the Northeast. Very warm temperatures will continue across Alaska, with isolated thunderstorms across portions of southeast Alaska and gusty southeast winds in western Alaska. National Predictive Services Outlook 6 Minutes for Safety: The 6 Minutes for Safety topic of the day is Dude Fire (Arizona) – June 26, 1990.
