July 2, 2024 – Yosemite National Park officials issue advice on how to stay safe and enjoy your visit during the NPS ranger waterexpected HOT weather.

Don’t fall for our thirst trap, if this gallon jug of water looks like a ranger, you may be experiencing signs of heat exhaustion.

Temperatures for the week ahead are forecast to be hot, hot, hot (read– maximums of 100°F or higher) and there is an excessive heat warning in effect from July 2 to July 9.

It's not hard to keep your cool if you prepare, stay informed, and take it easy this week:

A fun time in the park might look different this week, and that's okay! By limiting strenuous activity to early morning and early evening, and taking plenty of breaks in the shade, you are setting yourself up for a safe and enjoyable visit.

Be sure to bring (and consume) enough water and salty snacks. A minimum of one quart/liter of water every two hours is recommended (the gallon jug pictured holds 8 hours of hydration). Staying hydrated is important but be sure to balance your water intake with salty snacks, or you may risk hyponatremia, a scary word that means sodium levels in your blood are too low.

Rivers and creeks are still surprisingly swift, cold, and dangerous in some places. Look downstream to see what will happen to you if you're swept away. Stay away from rocks adjacent to rivers; these rocks are extremely slick even when dry.

Look out for all members of your group– the only hot dogs we want to see are those trapped in a bun, not trapped in your vehicle. If the pavement is too hot for your bare feet, it's too hot for your furry friends' paws.
