July 7, 2024 – Yosemite National Park officials invite you and your family to enjoy one of the best views of the Milky Way.
Take a break from scrolling to imagine the scene: Feel the rough granite beneath you and the cool night air against your face. Hear the lapping of water, the croaking of frogs, the chirping of crickets. Look up to see the Milky Way stretching across the sky and look down to see the stars reflected in the still water.
Nighttime in Yosemite is awash with majesty, and it is never more spectacular than in the coming months! From July through October, the densest part of the Milky Way stretches overhead, allowing for scenes like this. Even given Yosemite’s dark night skies and the right time of year, though, the Milky Way can only be seen on specific nights.
If you want to experience the Milky Way while in Yosemite this summer, here’s what you need to know:
⭐ The Milky Way is only visible when the moon is NOT overhead. After this week, the Milky Way will next be visible after the sun sets from July 24 - August 7 (the two weeks following a full moon.)
⭐Our eyes take time to adjust to the darkness! Do not look at any white light, including car headlamps and cell phone screens, for 30 minutes.
⭐Come prepared to stargaze! Bring red light, snacks, water, and an extra layer.
May our dark night skies bring you peace and beauty on your time in Yosemite.
