July 8, 2024 - Currently, 73 large active fires are being managed nationwide, and have burned 499,192 acres. Of these, 25 wildfires are being managed under full suppression strategies. Alaska continues to have the most activity, with 43 large fires, the majority of which are being managed with strategies other than full suppression. Over 10,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents nationwide.
The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center's Predictive Services unit and its partners have issued a fuels and fire behavior advisory spanning from central Alaska into the northeast Interior to the border with Canada. There is also a fuels and fire behavior advisory issued for California that highlights abnormally high fine fuel loading across the state. Residents, travelers, or workers on their ways to these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks.
The national predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for June through September. For additional information about the current outlook visit the Outlook page on the NICC site.
Record-breaking heat is coinciding with very low relative humidity and windy conditions across much of the Western United States, which means that accidental ignitions can spread quickly. If you live in a fire-prone area, especially if your home is adjacent to wildlands, take some steps to make your home more defensible if wildfire should come your way.
- Prune trees six to ten feet above the ground.
- Remove dead leaves and branches and dispose of them.
- Water your lawn regularly and store firewood away from the house.
- Be prepared for a fire emergency by having a plan for your family and pets.

Record high temperatures will continue in California, with some all-time records possible as temperatures near 120 degrees in portions of the Central Valley. Record high temperatures will also spread into central and western Oregon and into the southern/western Great Basin and Arizona, while the rest of the West remains well above average with low afternoon RH of 3-15%, except near the coast. A backdoor cold front moving through Montana and Wyoming will bring northwesterly sustained winds of 12-25 mph with gusts 25-40 mph to much of eastern Oregon, the northern/eastern Great Basin, southern Wyoming, and West Slope for elevated to critical conditions. Very poor overnight RH recovery will continue for California, southwest Oregon, the southern/western Great Basin, Arizona, and the Four Corners. Isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are expected in southeast Arizona into the southern half of New Mexico. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop near and behind a cold front in central/eastern Montana and northern Wyoming. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop across much of the northern and central Plains, with showers and thunderstorms along the Gulf and East Coasts near a cold front. Cool and wet conditions will continue across much of Alaska, with a brief decrease in dry trade winds across Hawai’i today. National Predictive Services Outlook 6 Minutes for Safety: The 6 Minutes for Safety topic of the day is 2024 Week of Remembrance Day 7.
