July 9, 2024 - Currently, 69 large active wildfires are being managed nationwide, and have burned 612,376 acres. Of these, 26 wildfires are being managed under full suppression strategies. More than 10,500 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country. Evacuation orders are in effect for residents near the Lake, Vista, Shelly and Basin fires in California, the Silver King Fire in Utah, the Pioneer Fire in Washington, and the Pius fire in Arizona.
Since January 1, 23,405 wildfires have burned 2,817,728 acres in the United States. About 93% of these wildfires were caused by people and 2.1 million acres were burned. This compares to nearly 1,300 wildfires ignited by lightning that burned more than 686,000 acres. States with the most human-caused wildfires include California, Georgia, Florida, Texas and Missouri.
The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center's Predictive Services unit and its partners have issued a fuels and fire behavior advisory spanning from central Alaska into the northeast Interior to the border with Canada. There is also a fuels and fire behavior advisory issued for California that highlights abnormally high fine fuel loading across the state. Residents, travelers, or workers on their ways to these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks.
The national predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for June through September. For additional information about the current outlook visit the Outlook page on the NICC site.
Record-breaking heat is coinciding with very low relative humidity and windy conditions across much of the Western United States, which means that accidental ignitions can spread quickly. If you live in a fire-prone area, especially if your home is adjacent to wildlands, take some steps to make your home more defensible if wildfire should come your way. Create fire breaks with lawns, driveways and walkways and stack firewood away from your home. Make sure you address is visible from the road so emergency responders can see it and ensure you have a plan for your family and pets to evacuate when needed. Hot temperatures will continue across the West, with record highs possible for the Inland Northwest into the Great Basin. Very low relative humidity of 3-15% will continue for the Inland Northwest, much of California, Great Basin, West Slope, and Southwest, west of the Divide with poor overnight recovery of 10-30%. Unstable conditions are expected on the east slopes of the Cascades today due to a thermal trough. Breezy westerly winds creating elevated conditions are also expected along the east slopes of the Sierra into portions of the Mojave Desert late in the afternoon and evening. Isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are likely in southeast Arizona and near the Divide in Montana and Wyoming, with wetter thunderstorms possible in New Mexico, especially near and east of the Divide. Beryl will continue to move north and east through the Mid-Mississippi Valley into the southern Great Lakes, becoming post-tropical during the day. Heavy rain and localized flooding are likely along its track. Meanwhile, isolated to scattered thunderstorms will continue across south Texas into the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. Wet conditions will return to western Alaska, with southerly downslope winds expected off the Alaska Range into the eastern Interior.
