The SNF has awarded two Integrated Resource Service Contracts (IRSC), totaling $5.4 million in costs, and totaling 11.5 million board feet in timber volume, in the wake of the Garnet Fire.
The purpose? The removal and disposal of dead and dying hazard trees which may pose a risk to public safety and infrastructure on the SNF.
The contracts were broken into various options to increase the speed of operations, Area (A) primarily addresses McKinley Grove Road, and was awarded to local timber operator Lite on the Land. San Joaquin Forest Products, another local timber operator was awarded Area (B) which includes the 11S12 and 11S15 roads, near Sawmill Flat CG and the Teakettle Experimental Forest area. Combined with areas (C) and (D), yet to be awarded, hazard trees spanning over 1,600 acres along 80 miles of access road within the Garnet Fire footprint will be removed by next fall.
Each project will help reduce risk to visitors and Forest personnel visiting the SNF, enhance their recreational experience, and serve as a first critical step in restoring this portion of the Forest to healthy, sustainable conditions.
