December 16, 2025 – Angels Camp, CA – Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on December 4th, at approximately 3:00 a.m., a Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on an SUV for a registration violation. The stop occurred in the area of Red Hill Road and Highway 49 in Angels Camp.

The driver, later identified as John Evans, 37, of Modesto, did not immediately pull over and continued for approximately half a mile before stopping, despite several available pullouts along the roadway. An enforcement stop was ultimately conducted, and Sheriff’s Dispatch confirmed that the suspect, Evans, was on active searchable probation.

Evans exited the vehicle to allow the deputy to safely search the vehicle. While searching the SUV, the deputy discovered suspected methamphetamine hidden inside a drink container in the center console. The search also revealed additional methamphetamine in a bag on the front passenger seat, as well as a glass pipe used for smoking methamphetamine on the ground near where Evans had been standing. In addition to the illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, deputies also discovered several tools commonly associated with burglary, large storage totes containing several hundred pounds of copper wiring and 20–25 cut sections of copper, all believed to be stolen. Suspect Evans was taken into custody without incident for narcotics, theft-related offenses, as well as for violating his active probation. He was transported to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office for booking, where he was charged with 3 Misdemeanors and 3 Felonies

Detectives were notified and are actively assisting with the case, working to confirm where the copper was stolen and whether there are additional victims. They are also investigating whether the suspect, Evans, may be connected to other recent copper thefts in Calaveras County and neighboring areas.

The case remains active, and further charges may be recommended as the investigation continues.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents and business owners to stay alert and report any suspicious activity involving copper or other valuable metals. If you see unknown individuals handling or transporting copper, or notice tampering with electrical or utility equipment, contact law enforcement immediately. Business owners should secure copper wiring and scrap, mark inventory, use lighting and surveillance, and verify anyone removing or buying copper. Working together helps prevent theft and keep our community safe.
