High-Country Health Food and Cafe in Mariposa California

December 26, 2025 – Yosemite National Park officials tell visitors to look up, you never know what you might find!

When wandering through Yosemite Valley, it’s easy to look up at the massive waterfalls and grand monoliths that dominate the landscape. But you’d be surprised to see how often you stand under the mistletoe this holiday season.

Once the California black oaks in Yosemite Valley drop their leaves, something strange remains tangled in the branches. These big, leafy clumps are mistletoe, a parasitic plant that feeds on the water and nutrients of its host. In the spirit of the season, the host trees generally don’t seem to mind and will live comfortably with a few clusters of mistletoe. However, if a tree gets overburdened, it can become vulnerable.

So, whether it's gliding raptors, trickling waterfalls, ant-sized rock climbers, or holiday traditions hidden in the tree canopies, keep an eye out for the subtler views on your next winter stroll through Yosemite.
