January 6, 2026 - Sierra National Forest officials report the recent heavy downpours have significantly impacted road conditions throughout the Sierra National Forest. While our road crews are working hard to maintain access, please stay alert and prioritize safety during your travels.
Minarets Road (4S81) Update: Significant Rockslide Cleared
We want to bring your attention to a major rockslide that occurred on Minarets Road (4S81) either late Saturday January 3rd, or early morning Sunday January 4rth, when it was reported. This road is one of our primary access routes. The slide obstructed two-thirds of the road, creating a hazardous and impassable situation for drivers (see photo).
Thanks to the quick response of our road crew, the debris was successfully cleared (see photo) by Sunday afternoon, and the roadway is now fully open.
Travel Recommendations
Even though main routes are currently clear, post-storm conditions remain unpredictable, particularly with many slopes adjacent to roads now saturated. Please follow these safety guidelines:
- Watch for Debris: Smaller rocks, mud, and fallen branches may still be present on shoulders or around blind curves.
- Reduced Speed and safe stopping distance: Drive slower than usual. Wet pavement and lingering fog can significantly decrease traction and visibility. Be able to fully stop within your range of visibility of the road ahead.
- Avoid Night Driving: Hazards like new slides or washouts are much harder to spot after dark.
- Slide/debris reporting: Should you be driving on the Forest and come across debris that is blocking the roadway, please report the location and extent of the issue to Sierra NF Emergency Command Center (ECC) at 559-500-4546.
Check the latest weather and road status before heading out. Ensure your vehicle has a full tank of gas and an emergency kit (water, blankets, and snacks) on board. Also ensure you have appropriate communication devices, knowing that there is not cell phone coverage throughout the entire Forest.
Stay safe out there!
