April 8, 2017 - SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblyman Jim Patterson’s bill to expand the California Forest Improvement Program (CFIP) to provide grants to middle and low-income families to help them maintain the legally-mandated 100-feet of defensible patterson jim california assemblyman fresnospace around their structures and homes will have its first committee hearing on Monday, April 17 in Sacramento.

AB 1391 was introduced to help ensure that middle and lower income families with a household income of less than $120,000 have access to state funds that are already available for people clearing their property. Currently funds are available through the CFIP program to help defray the costs of clearing trees on your property but those funds cannot be used to pay to clear the 100-feet around your home.

“The work needed to create a defensible space is extremely expensive and many families simply can’t afford this burden to their budget,” says Assemblyman Patterson. “This is absolutely a public safety issue.”

The possibility of fire is always a concern, but the tree mortality crisis has presented another immediate source of danger with the increased risk of falling trees that could strike people, structures, and power lines.

AB 1391 will be heard in the Assembly Natural Resources Committee on Monday, April 17th.
